On any given day you can find Kent and his amiable staff sampling more than 200 kinds of cheese from around the world, providing tips on throwing wine-and-cheese tasting parties, and dispensing advice on how to pack a romantic, gourmet picnic to be enjoyed during a Carmel beach sunset. (Word has it that many marriage proposals have been the results of such picnics!)
For 32 years, Kent and his staff (The Cheese Shop opened in 1975, Torrey joined in 1986, and bought the institution in 1999) have been fortunate enough to assist the public and professional trade through various media sources, publications and staged events. Highlights include annual festivals like the Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival, chef Michael Mina’s Levi Stadium Tailgate, Big Sky Montana’s Vine & Dine, Pebble Beach Food & Wine, Relais & Châteaux Gourmet Carmel, Big Sur Food & Wine, Central Coast Classic, Les Amis D’Escoffier Society Foundation Inc., Los Angeles Food & Wine, Masters of Food & Wine, World of Pinot Noir, and the Taste of Washington in Seattle.
The Cheese Shop has also been featured on the Travel Channel as a “must-see destination” and was showcased on the Food Network for its world-famous pesto.
Born and raised in Hawaii, Torrey has infused the ohana spirit into this family-oriented business. His mantra is: “Eat cheese, drink wine, live life happy!”
