Gary Maunakea-Forth

Mahiai, MAO Organic Farms - Waianae, HI

Gary Maunakea-Forth is an organic farmer and co-founder of MAO Organic Farms in Waiʻanae, where he has lived for nearly four decades. Born in Aotearoa (New Zealand), Gary first came to Hawaii in the late 1980s for what was meant to be a short visit to surf, hike, and play rugby. Captivated by the islands and their people, he decided to make Hawaii his home.

In the 1990s, Gary attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa, earning a BA in Environmental Studies and Political Science and an MA in Sustainable Development. Inspired by kalo farmers in Waianae and Waiahole Valley, and drawing on his work in community-based economic development and microfinance, Gary and his wife, Kukui, founded the Waianae Community Re-Development Corporation and MAO Organic Farms.

MAO is a Hawaiian social enterprise that grows certified organic fruits and vegetables while cultivating young leaders dedicated to a just, abundant, and sustainable Hawaii. The farm began on five acres and now stewards 280 acres in Lualualei Valley, offering youth a culturally grounded college-career auwai, or pathway, through paid leadership internship programs.

Today, MAO employs 40 staff members and has supported over 500 youth participants—nearly half of whom have earned college degrees, with 75 attaining a bachelor’s degree. Two program graduates now lead farm operations. Each week, MAO grows and harvests three to four tons of fresh, organic food for the community.

Outside of work, Gary and Kukui enjoy spending time in the ocean and cooking with their children and grandchildren—each being gently encouraged toward a life rooted in aina, pono food, and community service.
