UH School of Architecture Students to Design and Build Treat Street Facade
HONOLULU, HI (September 9, 2019)—Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival (HFWF) is announcing a new keiki activity — Treat Street, which will offer safe trick-or-treating for children — at the annual HMAA Presents Keiki in the Kitchen® Family Sunday in Honolulu on October 27, 2019.
From 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Victoria Ward Park, keiki ages 10 and under are invited to dress up in their favorite Halloween costume and trick-or-treat for individually-wrapped candy and prizes around Treat Street. Parents must register their children in advance on www.HFWF.me to participate and to receive a complimentary reusable canvas trick-or-treat Treat Street bag. The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa School of Architecture, American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) will create the physical “street” façade with windows, decorated based on a “Día de los Muertos”-inspired theme.
“Our AIAS chapter has been very involved with our community for some time now,” said Keola Annino, School of Architecture fabrication shop assistant. “We have always felt an interest and a responsibility to reach out to our communities and kokua in whatever capacity is needed of us.”
On October 20, the Whalers Village Presents Keiki in the Kitchen® Kāʻanapali event in Maui will also host their own Treat Street where children can visit participating retailers to receive individually-wrapped snacks and candy from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Since a lot of the activities at Keiki in the Kitchen® are focused on cooking and older children, we thought Treat Street on O‘ahu and Maui would be so much fun for the younger children,” said Denise Yamaguchi, CEO of Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival. “Halloween is right around the corner and with this addition, we will have activities for the entire family.”
Treat Street at Keiki in the Kitchen® is a free community event that was created as a signature Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival activity to give children the opportunity to meet and interact with celebrity chefs who participate in the Festival. Celebrity chefs will be in attendance hosting fitness activities, signing autographs, decorating spooky cupcakes and there may be a chef — or two — in costume.

Keiki in the Kitchen® is a nonprofit family-friendly event founded by Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival to provide the local community with an opportunity to interact with the Festival’s celebrity chefs, learn about healthy eating and lifestyles, and gain knowledge about Hawai‘i’s history and local agriculture. Created in 2014, Keiki in the Kitchen® is organized annually as part of the Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival and is targeted at visitors and residents. Presented by HMAA on O‘ahu, and in 2018 launched on Maui in partnership with Kā‘anapali Beach Resort Association and Whalers Village, Keiki in the Kitchen® engages children in hand-on activities through safe trick-or-treating, sweets decorating and autograph sessions with celebrity chefs, food and fitness challenges, interactive cooking demonstrations, and a student-run marketplace.
