Giovanni Montisci

Giovanni Montisci Winery - Sardinia, Italy

Montisci is a family-run winery, born about 20 years ago after Giovanni Montisci inherited an old vineyard and passionately began to discover the secrets of the vineyard.

After about 15 years of learning in the cellar and selling bulk wine in bulk, in 2004 Giovanni was finally ready to release his “Barrosu”, a beautiful Cannonau which soon earned a DOC designation as well as the approval of his customers. Production has expanded slowly over the years, until the birth of his famous “Riserva Franzisca”, a prestigious bottling Giovanni proudly labels by hand with string and wax seal, dedicated to his wife Francesca.

Giovanni’s elegant and distinctive Cannonau are produced from old albarello vines grown organically at 650 m above sea level in Mamoiada, a town in central Sardinia.

With just over 4 hectares of property and a radically artisanal approach to his craft, Giovanni has established himself as one of the greatest ambassadors of Sardinian wine in the world.  His production remains miniscule, capped in the best years to under one thousand cases.

The Montisci wines are fermented by the magic of ambient yeasts which live in the cellar, followed by a passage in large wooden casks.  They are bottled  without the use of filtration or clarification.
