TENTH ANNUAL - SAVE THE DATE – OCTOBER 2-25, 2020日本語
Island style, local food has always been the focus of award-winning chef Kelvin Ro. As the chef/owner of Honolulu’s popular Diamond Head Market and Grill for more than 18 years, he has earned his place in Hawaii’s culinary history for his keen sense of local flavors that remind patrons of their family favorite dishes, baked goods and foods. Gourmet plate lunches, salads, sandwiches, and baked goods with a healthy twist have made the Diamond Head Market and Grill a mecca for locals and tourists.
Ro was born in Wahiawa and his family’s restaurants sparked his interest in the culinary field. He graduated from Waipahu High School and earned a business degree at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In the mid 1980s he started a catering company and then a restaurant in Hilo. But it was the Kahala Moon Cafe in East Honolulu that won him accolades and awards for his dishes infused with Asian flavors and sophisticated presentations that reflected his local roots.
When Ro closed Kahala Moon Cafe, he became a chef/instructor at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific (CIP) at Kapiolani Community College where he has been involved in community development and fundraising for the last 20 years. He has championed the new CIP facility on the slopes of Diamond Head which will be a place for both local and international culinary students. With the Phase I labs already completed, Ro is currently working the next phase which includes a world-class restaurant, innovation laboratories, and classrooms. Like many of Hawaii’s celebrity chefs, Ro actively participates in community events, sharing his love of Hawaii and food.
