Carla Betts

Nichon Wines and Sucette Wines, Vine Vale - Barossa Valley, Australia

Carla Rza Betts began her career in the service industry fifteen years ago as a silverware polisher at Roy’s Kahana Bar & Grill on Maui. After years of enjoying virtually every front-of-the-house job imaginable, she finally accepted the position of Wine Director for April Bloomfield’s The Spotted Pig, The Breslin and The John Dory Oyster Bar in New York City.

In 2014 she fell in love and left New York in order to pursue An Approach To Relaxation, a project making wine with her now-husband, Richard Rza Betts. They make one white (Nichon Semillon) and one red (Sucette Grenache) in the Vine Vale region of the Barossa Valley in South Australia. Their vineyard, The Rza Block, planted between 1860-1880, is one of the oldest living vineyards on the planet.

As a Wine Director and Sommelier, Carla has been regularly featured in The Wall Street Journal, Wine Enthusiast, and the New York Times, as well as being dubbed The Queen of Sherry by the Village Voice.

An Approach To Relaxation has been listed as a New Face of Australia (Wine Spectator, 2017) as well as a Winery to Watch (Wine & Spirits, 2017).

Carla and Richard live in Amsterdam, Netherlands and travel a lot.
