David Lukela is the Executive Chef at ‘Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach. Lukela began his culinary career at Nobu Restaurant and quickly rose through the ranks. After a year and a half at Nobu, he was offered an opportunity to open and become executive sous chef at the exclusive, private dining restaurant, the world renown Vintage Cave with former chef Chris Kajioka. For Lukela this was ‘transformative’ and helped shape him into the chef he is today.
Today, Lukela oversees a staff of 60 at ‘Alohilani Resort, offering a variety of culinary options. With island-inspired dishes using the freshest local ingredients, you can enjoy a locally sourced breakfast buffet at Lychee, or a full menu offering throughout the day at O Bar.
Lukela puts a new slant on what it means to enjoy resort food and beverage through his exceptional culinary approach incorporating time-honored Hawaiian ingredients and seasonal local produce and flavors. Lukela’s vision for ‘Alohilani is simple, the freshest food with the highest quality and creativity. In addition to his culinary degree from Kapiolani Community College, Lukela holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in biochemistry, with a minor in economics, from Occidental College in Los Angeles. He is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu.
